If you don’t think being happy is hard, listen to the words of tenth-century ruler Abd al-Rahman III: “I have now reigned above fifty years in victory and peace; beloved by my subjects, dreaded by my enemies, and respected by my allies. Riches and honors, power and pleasure, have waited on my call, nor does any earthly blessing appear to have been wanting to my felicity. In this situation, I have diligently numbered the days of pure and genuine happiness which have fallen to my lot: they amount fourteen.”

Fourteen?! I’m not sure how Abd did his math, but my calculations say that this man was only happy for .1% of his life. Despite all his earthly success, he missed the genuine happiness that all of us desire.

But you don’t have to make the same mistake. The simple words of an imprisoned Christian can offer you more: “Rejoice in the Lord” (Philippians 4:4). Notice where the apostle Paul found his joy—in the Lord. Not in his money, power, or reputation but in the Lord.

In the Lord Jesus, you are loved, forgiven, accepted, included, invited, chosen, known, safe, and destined for eternal glory. Meditate on the gospel of your salvation and all the blessings that come along with it, and you will end up happy much more than 14 days of your life. The Spirit will produce an increasing amount of joy in your soul.
