3 essential verses if you feel ashamed

If you frequently feel shame, that humiliation over your sins that makes you feel like you don’t belong and that you need to hide, there are three Bible passages you need to read, hand copy on a note card, and place right next to your bed.

Here’s the first: “Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God” (Hebrews 11:16). These words are written about Abraham, Noah, Isaac, Jacob, and you, people who have both faith and flaws. Despite Abraham’s fear, Noah’s drunkenness, and Jacob’s issues with honesty, God was not embarrassed to be known as their God and Father. He isn’t embarrassed by you either.

Here’s the second: “Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters” (Hebrews 2:11). You might be on parole, facing charges, or in prison, but Jesus is not ashamed of you. You might need a meeting every day to stay sober, but Jesus is not ashamed of you. Your family might be a mess of separation, divorce, and complicated relationships, but Jesus is not ashamed of you.

Here’s the third: “Anyone who believes in [Jesus] will never be put to shame” (Romans 10:11). Anyone. Jesus. Never. Let each word sink into your soul, and you’ll know how to deal with your shame.

Through the love of God and the blood of Christ, shame is a temporary visitor and not a full-time resident of the Christian heart. Yes, we feel shame because of our sins, but we don’t live in it because our God is not ashamed to call us his own.
