“You have to pick your battles.” In other words, there are some things that are either just too small to worry about or battles you’ll never win, so don’t even try. When it comes to this physical life, it’s sometimes good advice.
Nevertheless, when it comes to our spiritual lives, it’s terrible advice, even deadly. A battle with sin, any sin, is a battle worth fighting. And you know what? It’s tiring. Look at your soul. Does it have bags under its eyes? Are you worn out from the struggle? Listen to what your Savior tells you today: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28,29).
What makes us tired is what we’re yoked to. Are you yoked to your spouse, career, your own mortality, your kids? Do you see what Jesus is saying? He wants you to realize that you are yoked to him. He wants you to know that he has won eternal rest for your soul because he paid for every sin on the cross, including the one you struggle with. You may lose battles against sin, but because of Jesus, you have already won the war. It’s a battle worth fighting!
