An unknown future in the hands of a known God

Some describe the future as peering into the deep unknown. Anything can happen! Do you agree that no one can know how something will work out in the end?

In the most important ways, you do know the end. You know that you’re God’s child and he will guard your faith through his Word and sacraments until the day that he calls you to his side in heaven. So, in the most important way possible, you do know.

It’s the less significant earthly future that we struggle with. Not knowing the future can be scary! We don’t know how long our jobs will last, how long we’ll have to spend with family on this earth, or how anything will turn out in this life specifically.

But God does. He says, “‘I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11). Notice what God says in this passage: “I know the plans I have for you,” not “You know the plans.” And we may be thinking, “Well, it sure would be nice if he let us in on those plans!”

But if the One who sent his only Son to die for me knows and controls my future, then that’s enough for me. Entrust an unknown future to a known God!
