As good as it gets

Sometimes I empty the dishwasher even though I could have pretended I didn’t know it was clean. Sometimes I clean out the garbage from the family car even though 99% of it isn’t mine. Sometimes I hold the door open for a few more people than common courtesy calls for.

Why do I do those things? Sometimes it’s because I want to reflect the love God showed me. But if I’m honest, sometimes I do them out of selfish pride.

Pride loves to be in charge of our motives. And even though you and I know better, pride wants everyone to think that when it comes to people in this world, we are as good as it gets.

King Solomon, who was way more “as good as it gets” than you and me, learned something important when it comes to the pride that loves to take hold of our motives:

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2).

Some forms of pride are outwardly obvious. But most forms of pride can only be detected through personal introspection. Today, think about why it is you do the good things you do. Remember that when it comes to what is at the center of your life and when it comes to everything your achievements stand for, Jesus is as good as it gets.
