There is nothing more important in relationships than spending time together. Too much time apart eventually dissolves closeness because relationships aren’t frozen at the peak of perfection. They can get stale after too much time apart. People don’t just pick up where they left off. That’s a myth. People always pick up right where they are.
Perhaps you feel distant from God. Maybe you were close once but not anymore. Maybe you never were that close. But if you miss him in your life, you can pick up right where you are. There’s no need to try to make up for lost time because he has kept in touch with you. You don’t have to fill him in or catch him up. You don’t need to fear awkward moments of becoming reacquainted. The lapses are in your time spent with him, not in his time spent with you. He did what he promised: “I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).
So go ahead and be with him. Be with him and find a great fellowship of Christians to be a part of. You don’t owe anyone any explanations about where you’ve been. Be with him and listen to him speak to you in the Bible. Be with him and believe his Son, Jesus, laid down his life for you. You are forgiven. You can be with him like you never were apart because he has always been with you.
