In the early 1600s, Thomas Goodwin, an English preacher, wrote a lot of words about God. A lot of words. When put together, Goodwin’s work filled 12 volumes, over 500 pages each, in small font with the lines squished together. But volume 2 was the most interesting. In volume 2, Goodwin didn’t cover 1/12th of the Bible, as you might logically assume. Nor did he narrow his focus to one book of the Bible. Instead, Goodwin spent an entire volume, 500 tiny printed pages, trying to explain just one chapter of the Bible! Which chapter was that? Ephesians chapter 2.

Have you read it? You should. If you wonder why the world is so messed up, why people are so messed up, or why you sometimes are so messed up, it’s in Ephesians chapter 2. And if you want to know how to fix it, you won’t need to turn the page. If your life could use a little more grace, mercy, and kindness, leave your bookmark in the same place because Paul is proud to cover that too.

I don’t have room to reprint the whole chapter here, but let me inspire you to open your own Bible to that epic page by quoting these epic words: “Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:3-5).
