We’ve all heard it before: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Whether or not you agree, I’m sure that Jesus’ disciple Peter would concur. In fact, he would probably tell you that one particular breakfast was the most important meal of his life, because it was during a breakfast with Jesus on the shores of Galilee that Peter vividly saw the forgiving heart of his Savior.
Three times during the breakfast, Jesus asked Peter if he loved him, each time a little more directly. Then three times Jesus commissioned Peter to go about his task as a gospel worker for Jesus. “Again Jesus said, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ [Peter] answered, ‘Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Take care of my sheep’” (John 21:16).
For a disciple who had recently denied knowing his Savior three times, Jesus’ patience and forgiveness was humbling. How amazing that Jesus still wanted this denying disciple to be his spokesman! The amazing love and mercy of Jesus!
That’s exactly the point. No matter how big your sins from yesterday, no matter how long you’ve stayed away from him, no matter how much you’ve denied him with your thoughts and actions, he welcomes you back and invites you to “have breakfast” with him. Whether you like to eat your Frosted Flakes for breakfast or not, start every day with Jesus and the day promises to be great!
