But I

There are three words that have changed my life in amazing ways—GOD is here! But there are two words that have changed my life in agonizing ways—But I.

But I is my two-word description of what the Bible calls our “flesh” or “sinful nature.” Paul writes, “All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts” (Ephesians 2:3). The human problem is that our flesh has thoughts, desires, and cravings and we tend to follow and gratify them. God says _______, and we respond with, “But I …”

Love your neighbor. “But I don’t like him.” Honor your father. “But I don’t think he’s worthy of honor.” Forgive 77 times. “But I have the right to be bitter.” Flee from sexual immorality. “But I have needs.” Don’t let unwholesome talk come out of your mouth. “But I need to vent sometimes.”

But I. Those two words can kill you because they separate you from the God who is life. This is why I want to encourage you today to call out your flesh. When you find yourself thinking in opposition to God, repeating the devil’s absurd claim that God is wrong (Genesis 3:4), drag your flesh into the light before it’s too late.

The flesh can kill you. But God is in the business of making you alive. “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ” (Ephesians 2:4,5).
