Chill out

About eight years ago at a local Barnes & Noble, while looking at the overpriced DVDs, I found something amusing. Those who say God doesn’t have a sense of humor will appreciate this. Tucked back under the restroom sign was the book section entitled “SELF-HELP.” How true of life!

Too often we get ourselves into messes and think that we can help ourselves out of them. Sadly, we realize the more we try to fix things, the worse they get. But we have a God who is always with us, 24-7, a God who can walk on water, a God who can raise the dead, a God who can feed thousands with a boy’s boxed lunch. The God who can defeat armies is the same God who is your refuge and strength, and not just when you feel it, but an ever-present help (Psalm 46:1). Trust him. You are safe in his arms!

When things are spinning out of control, look to Psalm 37:7: “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” A modern translation would be, “Chill out and know that God has your situation under control.”

We want to drive the car, but Jesus is in the driver’s seat. We need to put our mistakes and struggles in the rearview mirror and enjoy the ride. We miss too much of what we call life because we want to play God or we want to drive.

So, friends, chill out. Let God be God and do what he does so well.
