Cut the engine

When I was 20 years old, I was writing for the local newspaper and found myself doing an interview in a three-seater Cessna airplane with a student pilot and his instructor. At one point, as we were puttering across the sky—the world spilled out below us like a toy map—the instructor said, “Let’s see how you deal with this …”

And he killed the engine.

The silence was staggering. The only sound was the wind whistling around the metal shell of the dead aircraft. The only reason I knew we were falling—and falling fast—was because my stomach had swooped upward into my throat.

Giving up control is hard, isn’t it?

Some people refuse to let go of their grip on the wheel … all the way to the grave. We like to be in charge. We don’t like leaving it up to others to do what needs to be done.

Recently, I handed my 15-year-old son the car keys and had him drive me to the store for the first time. Wow! Talk about giving up control! But as Christians, we don’t need to worry because God has it all under control. “In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind” (Job 12:10).

God isn’t like humankind. He’ll never let us down. His plans are perfect, and we don’t lose ourselves by trusting in him.

Let’s give God the wheel!
