Debt can make you do spiritually dumb things. Debt causes stress, affecting your relationships and your waistline. Debt causes fights over spending habits. Debt causes lying and deception. Debt causes unfaithfulness in offerings to God. Debt destroys.

Jesus came in humility, showing that the most valuable things aren’t things. Jesus was born into a poor family, in a backwater town, to a conquered people. As an adult, Jesus lived as a wanderer, couch surfing the countryside. But Jesus was no lazy leech. He chose not to focus on money but on making his Father pleased with his perfect living. He taught us to focus not on money but on our Maker.

“It was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed … but with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18,19). God has forgiven you and released you from the devilish control that money desires to have over you. You were not saved with perishable things, so don’t live to save up perishable things.

There are nearly 2,200 Bible passages dealing with money and materialism. How do you step free from its control? A.B.C.

Acknowledge all you have comes from God. Use it well.

Budget God’s money. Use it well.

Control your spending. Use it well.

When you do, the stress of debt will stop pulling your focus off God. Control your money so your money doesn’t control you.
