Dispel our doubts

Fill in the blank to describe this well-known Bible character: ________ Thomas. I bet you got it: Doubting Thomas. He wasn’t there that first Easter Sunday evening when the risen Jesus appeared to the other disciples. Can you imagine the disciples saying to him, “Jesus really showed up! It was awesome!” Well, Thomas refused to believe it. A week later, Jesus appeared again. This time Thomas got to see him with his own eyes and touch him with his own hands. Jesus said, “Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe” (John 20:27). Thomas was no longer Doubting Thomas!

I had a friend in high school who always struggled with some challenge to what the Bible says. He would wrestle with it, and God would lead him to understand, but then another doubt would pop up. I thought, “Why does that happen to him?” A better question might be, “Why does that happen to us?” It has to do with our approach to what Jesus says. We don’t believe it because we can prove it. We believe it because the powerful and risen Son of God says it. It’s true. Living in that truth dispels our doubts! When we have doubts, where do we turn? Right back to our Savior who encourages, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29).
