Do not fear the kingdom of God

One of the hardest/scariest things about Christianity is that it declares Jesus to be King. That means you don’t get to make the rules, call the shots, or get the last word about which words you use, which sexual desires you embrace, or how you use the money God puts into your hands. Your job is to change your mind, bend your knee, and submit to every single word that King Jesus declares. That can be a scary thought.

If you’re struggling with submission, I encourage you to think about the cross. A little sign that Pontius Pilate had written in Latin, Greek, and Aramaic hung above Jesus’ head: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews(John 19:19). Our King hung on a cross.

That simple image takes our fear of authority away because it proves Jesus is a humble, sacrificial, for-us kind of King. To keep us eternally alive, our King was willing to die physically. To save us from ourselves, our King was willing to give up himself. To prove he is not a tyrant, not an abusive husband or a self-serving boss, our King hung on a cross. To prove that you could trust him, obey him, submit to him, Jesus endured the shame. There is only one word to describe a King like that—love.

So don’t be afraid. Yes, Jesus commands you to obey God’s Word, to submit “your truth,” your feelings, and your way of thinking to his unchanging Truth, but don’t be afraid. Your King wants what is best for you. The cross is the proof.
