Do you have a good memory?

Perhaps you’ve heard the phrase, “I was blessed with a bad memory.” The person who says this recognizes that it is a blessing not to be able to remember failings, shortcomings, and sins so readily. Indeed, because of Jesus’ death on a cross and resurrection from the grave, God gave himself a bad memory by saying, “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more” (Hebrews 8:12).

However, as Christians, we do not rejoice in bad memories. We rejoice that we have been blessed with great memories! No, not a recounting of our sins but a remembrance of what our God has done for us. This is the work of the Holy Spirit: “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14:26).

The Father sent Jesus at Christmas. The Son gave his life on Good Friday and rose on Easter. The Holy Spirit reminds us of all of it. Without the work of the Holy Spirit, you and I would be doomed to remember our sins forever in hell. But Jesus kept his promise to send the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit keeps his promise to remind us that our sins are forgiven! Isn’t it such a blessing to have a good memory?
