Everything good is a gift

I recently texted my mom about the day of my birth. November 18, 1980. Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Clifton Avenue (I was born at home). My mom reminisced, “Everyone said you were a big baby. … It sure felt like it!” Judy pushed 7 pounds, 12 ounces out of her body and now, 40 years later, to thank her for her suffering, I get a bunch of stuff. Isn’t that insane?! “Mother, you endured the worst pain of your life, so I think I should get a cake.”

The same thing happens at Christmas. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, leaves the pure happiness of heaven to be born in a manure-scented cave at a time in history when there was no air conditioning, cars, or Netflix. And to remember all that Jesus suffered for us, every Christmas we … get stuff! Isn’t that doubly insane?!

But maybe that’s the point. That’s why we call it a “gift.” It’s just given. It’s not earned or deserved or worked for. It’s not a paycheck. It’s grace. And James says that everything good in your life is a gift. “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights” (James 1:17).

You and I have sinned against God. Despite the endless list of our errors, however, God has gifted us with every good thing. What kind of God would respond to sin in such a way? Only our God.

What grace! What a Savior!
