Faith to believe

The early Christians were heartbroken. A great persecution had broken out against them, and many of them were losing their lives. First it was Stephen. Then they lost James. Now Peter was in prison, and it seemed he would soon be gone too. Heartbroken, the church did the only thing they could do.

They prayed.

We are not told what they prayed for, but we know they had faith to pray earnestly during an intense time of uncertainty.

What’s ironic is that even though they had the faith to pray, they did not have the faith to believe God could answer their prayers.

Acts 12 records Peter’s miraculous escape from prison. Once freed, he went to the house where these Christians were praying. He knocked on the door and called out to the servant on the other side of it. Then this happened:

“When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, ‘Peter is at the door!’ ‘You’re out of your mind,’ they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, ‘It must be his angel’” (verses 14,15).

It’s one thing to pray for a miracle to happen. It’s another thing to believe that God can do it.

Ask God for a big faith that doesn’t just pray for big things to happen. Remember the power of Jesus’ resurrection and believe that God can do even more than you ask.
