Frederick Douglass said, “One and God make a majority.” The idea is that in the face of insurmountable odds, even if you only have God on your side, you will prevail. Sometimes it’s easier said than believed.
At his ascension, Jesus told his followers they would be his witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. What an army Jesus must have been addressing when he gave the church her marching orders! Well, actually . . . “In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty” (Acts 1:15).
So 120 people would be his witnesses to the whole world? It sounds like an impossible task, doesn’t it? And yet, remember who our God is? He is the God who parted the Red Sea. He turned water into wine. He fed thousands with just a few loaves of bread and some fish . . . twice! That is who our God is!
How often you and I forget that or doubt it or fail to appreciate it. We worry. We get anxious. Have you forgotten that the almighty Creator of the world doesn’t just have muscles but also a heart . . . a heart for you? It led him to a cross for you. And now this all-powerful God, the God who can accomplish the “impossible,” is on your side.
What did those 120 accomplish? By the end of their lives, the Word had reached as far as Asia Minor, North Africa, and Europe. Impossible? Not with God on their side!
