God is with us

Life continues day in and day out, morning and evening. Seasons emerge and fade. Leaves color and fall and then months later slowly emerge. Children are born and grow. Our family members grow old and leave us. Power is accumulated and disintegrates. Governments rise and fall. Illness has us in its grip and then loosens its hold. We savor tears of joy and are caught in the grasp of grief. The words of Ecclesiastes 3:1 resonate with nearly everyone: “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven” (KJV).

We can feel powerless in our own lives, unable to stop time, unable to effect change, unable to pursue the good that needs to be done for Christ, for our neighbors, for our families. “Who is in control?” we ask. “Who is working for us?”

The confession of this psalmist, writing during the destruction of every other certainty, can be our hope as well: For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth” (Psalm 74:12 KJV). Can you stop for a minute and focus on this certainty? Can you picture it in your head? Our God—Father, Son, and Spirit, who spoke our world into being—still stands in our midst, protecting, guiding, working. As his beloved child, he holds you close to him.

God is never absent from his earth. He who formed it continues working in it, alongside and on behalf of his beloved people. His arm is strong. His wisdom is unsurpassable. His goodness never ends.
