“The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb” (Psalm 19:9,10).
What’s your view of the guidelines and commands set down by God in Scripture? Are they a mixed bag, some of them reasonable and others out of touch with today’s world? Do you feel guilty when you “break a rule” and yet secretly feel that it can’t be helped in this day and age? Would you describe God’s guidelines as “more precious than gold” and “sweeter than honey”? Are you somewhere in between?
As Christians, we may have absorbed the idea that God’s commandments and guidelines are his way of hammering us. We may also hammer ourselves or others with God’s commands, in ways that aren’t Christ-like at all. God’s love and God’s wisdom are trampled under guilt and anger toward God, other people, and ourselves.
But perfect love guides God’s every interaction with you and me. Perhaps it’s more useful to think of God’s guidelines as an operating manual written to keep the human heart, mind, and body in top working condition. God is our wise designer and loving Father. He knows what the human soul and body need to live a life that works.
Lord, let me see love in your every word. Grant me insight and help me extend your love to others, especially those who seem, in my eyes, to disregard your ways. Amen.
