Years ago my daughter went to the store with her grandma and wanted to buy a new toy. Thankfully, my baby had money in her pocket, so she pulled out the two pennies and one dime to show off. Twelve cents, which was pretty good for a kid her age. But grandma had to explain that what was good for a little girl wasn’t good enough for a big store. She was about one percent of the way there for the $12 toy. When Maya heard the news, she broke down crying.
That story reminds me of the difference between being a “good” person and being “Good” enough to get into heaven. This is why Jesus once told a relatively good guy, “One thing you lack” (Mark 10:21). This is the same reason why Jesus would say the same thing to you. You could be as compassionate as Mother Teresa and as courageous as Martin Luther King Jr., but you would still lack something if you want to be with God. You might feel like a fairly good person, but God lives in an ocean of Goodness. If you want eternal life, life that Good, you can’t just be good. You must be Good like God.
Here’s the bad news, according to Jesus: “With man this is impossible” (Mark 10:27). Here’s the good news, according to Jesus: “But not with God; all things are possible with God” (Mark 10:27). So cling to Jesus today. He’s the only one who can make both bad and good people “Good.”
