Your school days might be a part of the distant past, but I want to give you a year’s worth of homework. Up for it? (Before you answer, let me explain what it is and why it is.)
What is the homework? To pray the Lord’s Prayer every day for the next year. Here’s one version of Jesus’ classic conversation with the Father: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we also forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen” (based off Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4).
Why this homework? Because happiness is bundled up in that brief prayer. Knowing that you have a perfect Father in heaven, marveling at his holy name, believing that he is the protecting King of your soul, being part of his will to bring more love to more lives, trusting you are forgiven of all your sins, escaping bitterness by forgiving others, denying self and every evil temptation, and fixing your eyes on his glory are the best ways to find happiness that lasts.
So, student of the Word, are you ready for your homework? You won’t regret following Jesus as you talk to our Father.
