2020 was the year of the cancellation. Vacations were canceled. Sports seasons were canceled. Conferences were canceled. The coronavirus meant that nearly everything was “wait and see” at best and already canceled at worst.
But that is why I love Joe’s T-shirt. Joe is part of the Time of Grace camera crew who uses his gifts to get the message from my church to your screen. He is also the guy who has an impressive collection of really cool Christian T-shirts. One of my favorites from Joe’s wardrobe is a simple black shirt that declares, “Hope will not be canceled.”
Hope is a for-sure future, a guarantee that is only possible because our God knows and controls the future. The author of Hebrews reminds us, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful” (10:23). You can hold tight to the promises of God because the Promiser is faithful. What God says, God does.
So take heart. All the things in your life will work out for good (even the divorce you didn’t choose). Your labor to love that prickly neighbor next door is not in vain (even if he refuses to warm up to you). Your habitual prayers are powerful (even if you feel like you’re talking to the air and nothing more).
The hope of future blessings will not be canceled, because the God who promised is faithful.
