I love bread! I love it toasted and slathered with real butter. I love it at those nice restaurants doused in olive oil and vinegar. I love it covered with bacon, lettuce, and tomato (but mostly the bacon!). My apologies to anyone struggling to stay true to the Atkins diet, but are you hungry yet? Come to think of it, I’m not sure it’s the bread I love or what I put on the bread.
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John 6:48,51). I love Jesus, but I love him more topped with material comfort in life. I love Jesus covered in personal success. I love Jesus slathered in the approval of family, friends, and coworkers. Do you see my point? We need to strip away the toppings and just crave the bread . . . the Bread of Life, that is. This bread is Jesus.
It’s easy to get entranced by what the world says we need and fail to appreciate that there is only one thing we need. We need bread . . . spiritual bread. We were starving, so Jesus came down from heaven to satisfy our need. This bread gives us the message of the cross in his Word that feeds us so we can live forever. Are you hungry yet? Me too!
