My firstborn son learned very quickly to say these three words (not necessarily in this order): Mom, Dad, and MINE! Those born after the first child learned these: Mom, Dad, and It’s not fair!
Growing up, I remember my second-oldest brother, Faron, complaining that it wasn’t fair that my oldest brother, Kyle, got to do everything first, from using the chain saw to driving a car. And I was the baby of the family, so I really thought it wasn’t fair. But that’s the way life works sometimes.
“Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant” (Philippians 2:5-7). It is not fair that the God of the universe should become one of his own creatures. It is not fair that he should suffer in any way, let alone undeservedly. It is not the way life works! God’s amazing love, grace, and mercy fly in the face of everything we know about the way life works. And you know what? THANK GOD! Our God and his amazing grace do not treat us as we deserve.
Marvel in what Jesus did and still does for you, and share that joy with others. By God’s grace alone, say it with me people: “That’s fair!”
