Ask a cancer patient if it’s worth it to put up with chemotherapy when the treatment often makes him or her feel worse than the disease. Ask an Olympic athlete if it’s worth it to endure grueling years of athletic training that is often as monotonous and repetitious as it is painful. Ask a soldier if it’s worth it to risk life and limb amidst the dangers of the battlefield. The life of a Christian is no different. “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34).
This teaches us that the path of glory comes through the cross. Simply put, this means the life of a Christian will not always be easy. As Jesus followers, we will suffer depression, deal with death, and see brokenness in our own families. However, there is a difference in suffering because you are a Christian and suffering because of a sin.
Follow me for a minute. Where in your life do you allow the creation to become greater than the Creator? What has the power to make you sad or happy? Is it that your cat post didn’t get the number of likes you wanted? Did the performance of your favorite sports team send you into a tailspin? What defines your happiness? Creation or Creator? Suffering will happen; loss is inevitable. No pain, no gain. Christ endured all the pain so we have everything to gain! Is it worth it? You bet!
