Why do you suppose Hallmark Christmas movies have become so popular? These low-budget, incredibly predictable, big-city-girl-falls-for-small-town-guy-with-great-hair films have taken over the holiday broadcast schedule for months at a time. How?
According to some media analysts, Hallmark offers us a few things that resonate deep within our souls—safety, warmth, and love. In our dangerous, cold, and unloving world, Hallmark allows us to sit back, relax, and rest without fear of a dark ending or a serious twist in the happy plot. Yes, it may be 90 minutes of predictable fiction, but it sure makes us feel good.
The nonfictional Jesus, however, offers us something better. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). The unchanging nature of Jesus is the safest, warmest, most secure source of love in all the universe. Yesterday, he loved you. Today, he loves you. Tomorrow, he will love you. You never have to doubt, question, or wonder about his commitment to his relationship with you because he is the God who does not change, whose grace is always the same.
One of the harder parts about life is that anything can change in an instant—your health, your job security, your friendships. But one of the best parts about trusting in Jesus is that none of life’s changes can change his promise to be with you, now and forever.
