Look for fullness

I’d like you to think about something I’m wrestling with. How do you see the Bible? Is it half empty, or is it full? Are you a stickler for the rules, or is your favorite commandment, “Love one another”? Do its warnings urge us toward good deeds, or are they a destiny we must fulfill? I suppose we could bring doomsday on ourselves if enough people believe the Bible says it should happen soon. Do you keep the commandments because you are afraid not to or because you really want to? Are you crabby because nothing is perfect, or are you happy to see beauty where you least expect to find it? Do you think being a Christian won’t pay off until you die, or are you enjoying yourself now because your faith adorns your walk with good character? Is your life half empty, or is it full?

When you read the Bible, are you looking for the fullness of God? “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority” (Colossians 2:9,10). Jesus is the fullness of God, and he is God’s Word brought to vivid life. He is the embodiment of God’s love for us. When you’re not sure what to focus on in the Bible, focus on Christ. Jesus’ life and work and teachings and example make everything in the Bible complete. And he makes us complete.
