Manna must be fresh

“I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day” (Exodus 16:4). The curious bread God dropped on his people to sustain them was gathered and eaten fresh every day. Only before the Sabbath could they tell the servers, “I’m gonna need a box for my leftovers.” Otherwise, they couldn’t take any home to warm up on a hot rock the next day because it would be way past its expiration date. God was making a point: “I will give you what you need today, and I will give you what you need again tomorrow. This is how relying on me works.” He made that belief a habit by insisting that his people gather and consume this special bread every day.

The Bible is filled with promises of bread. There’s bread for our physical well-being and bread for our spiritual security. We can read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest something fresh from God every day. We keep it fresh when we gather with our families or our Bible study groups and ask, “Where do we feel emptiness gnawing at us today?” Then we open our Bibles and find something that lifts our spirits and fills us with hope and encouragement. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). Brother, Sister, keep it fresh. “For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (John 6:33).
