A young family’s picnic was suddenly shut down by rain. After they hurried to the car, Dad pointed out a tender sight. A baby bird too young to fly in the rain was shivering and shaking in fear from the powerful rainstorm as momma bird held her protective wing over her young.
Why did the baby bird still quake in fear? Well, the winds still howled. The water splashed up into its face. Raindrops pelted the slightly uncovered corner of its wings. Only a tiny fraction of the true danger that surrounded was felt, yet the baby bird was terrified.
The spiritual forces of evil surround you! This world is only evil all the time. Worry howls. Disease and death splash into your life. You get pelted by pain and problems. Yet these are only a tiny fraction of what threatens to destroy you! Why? Psalm 91:4 brings truth and daily comfort: “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge.”
How often Christians walk blissfully unaware of danger that surrounds them. We complain against God, “Where were you?! Where was your protection?!” when only a splash of one raindrop’s worth of hurt hits us while a monsoon of misery rages around us. You and I are covered and cared for by the Almighty. If you’re scared right now, don’t focus on the sound of the storm; nestle into the embrace of the One who calms the storm. And peace will follow in your true Refuge.
