Pop-up storms

Have you experienced a pop-up storm on a sunny summer day? Within a few moments, your activities must change as you respond to new conditions.

Each day of our lives contains pop-up storms of different magnitudes. And our outlook may suddenly shift too, making each situation loom large. As believers, we are not immune from suffering or anxiety. We may bob in a sea of despair, each wave threatening to fill our lungs with water as we pray for breath to survive.

But we don’t need to face life barely treading water. “Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up; God is our salvation” (Psalm 68:19 ESV). The Lord comes beneath us and “bears us up” so that we don’t drown. And while Jesus very clearly tells his followers, “In this world you will have troubles” (John 16:33), he also reassures us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. … Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

God is our salvation. We share in Christ’s resurrection and will live with him forever. God is also our salvation in the nitty-gritty of daily life. He wants to lead us into the way of love and trust as we come to understand his steadfast character, praise him, and work with him to bless others.

What evidence of God’s support can you see when you examine the last 24 hours? God is daily investing in and supporting the well-being of your body and soul.
