The Protestant Reformation that was launched, more or less, by Martin Luther’s tacking of 95 debate theses to the Wittenberg town bulletin board was only one of many reformation efforts over the millennia. The central issue of all spiritual reform is to redirect people to the fundamentals of the faith: what is God’s message, and how do you know that?
Jesus predicted that there would be false Christs and false prophets in every era. His sad prophecy has proven true. Satan cannot resist prompting people to tamper with the Word and to substitute their thoughts (and his thoughts) and then pass them off as divine revelation. We must not let that happen on our watch. Man’s word must never replace God’s Word: “‘I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, “The Lord declares.” Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,’ declares the Lord. ‘They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them’” (Jeremiah 23:31,32).
Satan will mess with you at some point—perhaps he is doing a number on you right now. How do you know what to think? What’s right and what’s wrong? What in our culture is from heaven and what’s from hell? How can I hear the true voice of God?
