I noticed it when I was still teaching. The middle seemed to be disappearing. There were exceptional students and special needs students. Few kids were just average. I see it in our society. People either have good incomes and live in big houses or are struggling to make ends meet and find something affordable to live in. Political moderates get voted out. Even the middle child is an endangered species as many couples opt to have just two children. I don’t think it’s anyone’s aspiration in life. Who’s hoping to be successful enough just to make it to the middle? I miss the big modest middle. We seem to be engineering it out of existence.
Congratulations if you’re highly successful. I really hope you can stay that way. Making the adjustments required to go down is very difficult. May God lift you up if you’re not feeling so successful. Please keep striving and never give up. Working your way up is also very difficult, and it can take a long time. And don’t feel embarrassed if you’re stuck in the middle. You lack nothing. “A godly life brings huge profits to people who are content with what they have. We didn’t bring anything into the world, and we can’t take anything out of it. As long as we have food and clothes, we should be satisfied” (1 Timothy 6:6-8 GW). It’s the middle that holds everything together.
