Seeing the future

Most of our stress is because of the unknown. How will the kids turn out? What will retirement look like? Will I be able to make rent this month? Will our relationship survive?

So much is unknown that our prayers get a little panicky. “Dear God, what am I going to do? How is this going to work out? Please just fix it.”

Really, we are asking God to let us see the future. That’s not how it works. You know what though? We can see the past.

In his Word, God reminds us of the great things Jesus has already accomplished: living a perfect life (and giving us credit for that), dying a painful death (so we don’t have to), and rising from the dead (so we can be with him forever). Which, really, gives us a glimpse of our eternal future.

“In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. . . . In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed” (1 Peter 1:3-7).
