Sitting shotgun with Jesus

Once upon a time, Jesus pulled a 15-passenger van into a man’s driveway. He honked the horn, rolled down the window as the door opened, and smiled, “Hey, it’s me, Jesus. I got room if you want.”

The man looked around in disbelief, “Me? You’re inviting me? Um, yeah! Give me a second to pack all my stuff.”

“Oh, wait,” Jesus said. “We don’t have room for that, but we have room for you. You in?” But the man looked back and saw the home he loved, his leather chair, his new 65” TV, and the evidence of his comfortable life. He glanced back at Jesus, who was still waiting, still smiling, but the man’s face fell. Without a word, he quietly closed the door.

Did you know that something like that happened once? You can read the story in Mark 10, but here’s the saddest part: “At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth” (verse 22).

I won’t lie to you. Jesus wants all of you. He wants you to follow him, no matter what dreams, goals, or comforts you might have had before he showed up. This is why so many people break eye contact with Christ and quietly close the door.

But don’t! Because Jesus wants you to follow him. He wants your life to be lived at the side of the Son of God and Savior of the world.

What an offer! What a blessing, no matter the cost, to be with Christ!
