“May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine on us—so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us” (Psalm 67:1-3,6).

This psalm of thanksgiving and request for God’s blessing reminds me of Easter. The psalmist calls on God to renew the graciousness and favor that he has promised and demonstrated since the beginning of time. And then the psalm celebrates a culmination: “The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.”

The goodness of earthly harvest suggests pumpkins, apples, and the harvesting of crops in the fall. But the earth also yields its increase in spring—birds hatch, lambs are born, and seeds that have lain dormant all winter sprout and push their way through the cold earth.

For Christ followers, spring brings remembrance of our own new life given early one spring day more than two thousand years ago when Jesus returned to life, giving all humanity a spring beginning.

This new life, our spring, benefits us now. We won’t reap the full harvest until we ourselves are raised from physical death, but as we live out our time of grace here on earth, we soak in God’s love and live fruitful lives, blessed by God and blessing others.

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift of love!
