That doesn’t seem right!

When Jesus taught the disciples about forgiveness, he said, “Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them” (Luke 17:4). Imagine a coworker slaps you and says, “I’m sorry.” Then he does it again, again, and again. Are you really going to let it happen seven times? This is a TOUGH command. The disciples’ instantaneous reaction was, “Increase our faith!” (Luke 17:5). They knew it would take a sizeable faith to forgive like that.

Jesus doesn’t ask you to do anything he hasn’t already done for you.

How many times have you repeated the same sin even though you promised to never do it again? Lovingly, mercifully, continually, God forgives you.

God asks you to reveal what mercy is by treating others the same. Whom do you have a difficult time forgiving? Got that person on your heart? Good. Now, forgive them. “But that’s not fair! If I forgive them, they get away with it, and that doesn’t seem right.”

You’re misunderstanding forgiveness and responsibility. When you forgive someone, that doesn’t wipe away the responsibility of their sin before God. All sin is held accountable before God. When you forgive someone, you release yourself from the pain. You’re not a fake or a phony when you forgive someone when they don’t seem to deserve it; you’re being Christian, Christ-like and compassionate. It’ll change your heart and, Lord willing, their heart when they experience grace!
