The most important of all

Name some of the most important people and positions in our world. What did you come up with? Maybe you said, “The president, corporate CEOs, pro athletes, famous actors.” Did you even think of a baptized child who lives for Jesus by helping others? Did you consider as most important a Christian mother who does the dishes or a Christian father who changes a diaper? What about an employee who tries to make his boss’ company the best it can be? Did you think of yourself?

Jesus did. Jesus thought of you as he left the glory of heaven, where he received his due praise as King of kings and Lord of lords, to become your servant, to become human. Jesus valued you enough to serve you by living the perfect life of service God requires and then dying on a cross for all our service failures. Now Jesus thinks of you as “great” whenever you use your gifts to serve others. And it does not need to be feats of philanthropic proportions but the everyday opportunities that Jesus gives you as a parent, child, friend, coworker, etc.

Jesus said, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26). The world has it all backward when identifying the most important people and positions. But you know what Jesus considers most important! God bless you today as you carry out your work of serving—the most important work of all!
