The real Valentine’s love

Today is Valentine’s Day. For many, Valentine’s Day has become a Hallmark holiday filled with sappy sentiment and red hearts … everywhere. But the original St. Valentine fought for godly love and faithfulness.

The exact details are a little unclear, but apparently St. Valentine ignored a Roman Emperor’s edict to discourage young people from marrying. You see, the emperor believed that single soldiers fought better. This edict, which prohibited soldiers to marry, resulted in rampant promiscuity. Valentine performed marriages in violation of the edict and apparently lost his life for it. He died for love. Real love.

There is a love story that trumps even that of St. Valentine: “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). What love! This love story involves a bride who is unfaithful, constantly losing in her fight against temptation. God calls us the bride of Christ. This love story involves a Bridegroom who credited his perfect record to her and then gave his life in a most horrific way for her. He died for love. Real love. Now that is a love story St. Valentine could get behind!

As you seek to thank God for the love of your life today and show that love to your significant other, remember to thank God for the true love of your life, Jesus. His love will never fail you!
