Have you ever heard of Stacey King? He was a rookie for the Chicago Bulls in 1990 who almost lost a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. King missed a few key free throws, finishing the game with only a single point. Thankfully, however, another king was on the court that night—Michael Jordan. MJ had one of the best games of his career, ending that night with a whopping 69 points and leading the Bulls to an overtime victory.
After the game, a reporter asked Stacey King about his night on the court. King replied, “I will always remember this as the night that Michael Jordan and I combined to score 70 points.”
Ha! Isn’t that great? I love that quote, but I love the truth that it reminds me of even more, namely, that we go through life with the King of kings by our side. Jesus is even better than Jordan, and his presence comes with power. What struggle are you facing that’s bigger than Jesus? What situation is stressing you out that’s bigger than Jesus? What sin have you committed that’s bigger than Jesus?
When Jesus said, “Surely I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20), he made a game-changing promise, a promise that would enable the apostles to make disciples of nations, the same promise that enables us to do things that seem impossible without him.
So don’t be afraid. Despite your weaknesses, Jesus is with you. This just might be the day that you and Jesus combine to do something extraordinary!
