The truth

If I hold up three fingers and ask you, “How many fingers am I holding up?” I’m hoping you say three. It would be foolish to see the three fingers and say, “I don’t believe you; you have four fingers up.” Or what if I say, “I’m holding up three fingers,” and you still insist I’m holding up four fingers? That would be a complete denial of what’s in front of you—the truth. I know this is an odd analogy, but hear me out. There’s a point; I promise.

Why is it when God tells us we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14), instead of praising him like the rest of that verse says, we often insist it’s not true? We look in the mirror and feel ashamed. We scroll on social media and compare ourselves to others. We take the lack of likes on our Facebook posts to mean we’re failures. We think we have no purpose or no special gifts or talents to contribute anything to anyone.

Dear friend, believing these lies is like holding up three fingers and saying there are four. When you see three fingers held up, that’s the truth … three fingers. The same is true about what God says about you. He made you—fearfully and wonderfully! He loves you—enough to send his only Son to save you! He gave you unique gifts and talents to be used to his glory—yes, he did! (See 1 Peter 4:10 or Romans 12:6-8.)

You can praise God with all of Psalm 139:14: I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

God doesn’t make junk; that’s the truth.
