There’s a discrepancy

Have you ever had buyer’s remorse over fast food? It can happen. I’ve seen it.

Three friends and I were each ordering separately at a certain establishment. Although all four of us paid the same amount of money, what one friend got for his money was far less than what the rest of us received. Let’s just say he was a little salty for the rest of the afternoon.

And a little hungry.

When you put in good money, you want a good return. You should get what you pay for. That’s how this world works.

But that’s not how God works. Trust me; you wouldn’t like the result if you got what you deserved. It doesn’t matter how good you think you are. You would not get a good return.

Thankfully God is not fair. Every sin should be punished on the spot, but in God’s mercy he carries that sin to the cross where it can be settled. If anyone has any reason to complain about fairness, it isn’t humanity.

There’s a time and a place to keep people honest in this world for the sake of peace and civility. There might even be a time to ask for a refund if the order isn’t what you expected. But for today, remember this:

There’s a discrepancy between what you have and what you deserve. And in Christ, the discrepancy falls in your favor.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good” (Psalm 107:1).
