Have you read the Scarlet Letter? A woman named Hester is pregnant; no one knows the identity of the father except Hester and the pastor. Too ashamed to confess his sin, the pastor smiles and preaches, but the secret of his affair kills him inside. He can’t live with the lie but is afraid to speak the truth. In my favorite quote, the pastor says, “Had I one friend … to whom … I could daily [go to], and be known as the vilest of all sinners, [I think] my soul might keep itself alive.”

That quote brings me to tears, not because I have had an affair but because I know how good it is to have friends like that. God has surrounded me with a small group of Christians who know me fully yet love me completely. I can tell them I am a sinner, the vilest sinner I know, and yet they don’t run away. They listen. They love. They bring me back to Jesus.

Do you have friends like that? James writes, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed” (5:16). While God loves to hear our honest confessions, he also loves overhearing our confessions to others, an act that allows fellow believers to imitate our Father and forgive us completely.

It’s hard to preach the gospel to yourself, but it is easy for them. Tell them what happened. Then listen when they tell you what happened at the cross.
