Turn ’em loose

I’ve looked behind the curtains in a number of religious organizations. The people at the top seem preoccupied with pulling the levers so they can keep all the munchkins in line on the same rigid road. Eventually, the word gets out that the church is a confining place to work. I have a suggestion for ecclesiastical authorities. Send a memo to the people you supervise. Tell them, “We trained you. We trust you. You know what it’s all about. Do what you think is best.” Then don’t have any meetings for about five years and see what happens. I say turn ’em loose. “Because of God’s immense generosity and grace, we don’t have to dissect and scrutinize every action to see if it will pass muster” (1 Corinthians 10:23 MSG).

Churches are competing with every other industry to recruit young talent. How would we attract the best and brightest if we posted our openings on CareerBuilder? “Enterprise with eternal consequences will pay you a modest salary to play it safe.” Or, do we want smart, ambitious, and creative leaders? Do we want followers or forerunners? Would your church have hired John the Baptist?

One of my mentors told me, “The most unfair thing you can do is treat everyone the same.” We are not all the same. And we shouldn’t expect the same things from each other. Let’s give each other permission to kick the flying monkeys off our backs and do what we think is best.
