Unzip that baggage

As a child of the 1980s, there were some interesting fashions: parachute pants, shoulder pads in sports coats, and my favorite—KangaRoos shoes, which were sneakers that had zipper pockets on each shoe. Why wouldn’t you want zipper pockets on your feet?

While attending a big grade school basketball tournament, my mother gave me a roll of quarters to use for my food money. So Mr. Brainy here decided to shove all five dollars of quarters in both of his zipper shoe pockets. Never did it occur to my sixth-grade brain that I was walking around with a lot of extra weight. It also never dawned on me that while I played carrying all that currency in said shoes, that I was slower and couldn’t move as quickly.

While diving for a ball, my shoe zippers burst open and quarters went rolling all over the wood gym floor. I can still see the officials tucking the quarters into their pockets and my coaches wondering, “Did he really have quarters in his shoes?”

You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea” (Micah 7:19). What past sins are you lugging around? What keeps you awake at night with regret?

Friends, unzip the extra baggage and let it roll away. Christ reminds us that it is finished. Our sins are atoned for. You and I are free to hop around with joy—dare I say like kangaroos?!
