I remember being lost once when I was young. I was at a department store with my mother. I walked along very contentedly behind a flowing dress until I realized that it was not the flowing dress of my mother. I remember the feeling of panic to this day. I also remember, with tears in my eyes, the warm embrace of my mother after she found me. What a relief!
I don’t remember being lost spiritually. I was baptized as an infant and have only known the warm embrace of my heavenly Father. And yet, sin separates you and me from God’s embrace. Every day we stray in sin and feel that separation. It is why, every day, we need to find our Father’s arms of forgiveness in the cross of his Son, Jesus. What a relief!
In the parable of the lost coin in the Bible, Jesus talks about the joy he has when he finds us: “‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:9,10). This is what happens every time someone repents and receives forgiveness.
Do you know someone who could make the angels rejoice? It may be someone you have a grudge against or who’s carrying guilt. Bring that person back to the arms of their Father in heaven by announcing his forgiveness. Then one day, with tears in their eyes, they too will feel the relief of heaven!
