What’s your secret?

Hello. My name is Jon Enter. Husband. Father of four. Pastor. Coach. Sin addict.

And so are you. You may not see it. You may not be willing to admit it. But you are. You have sins you know are wrong, but you do them anyway. You want to stop. You can’t or, really, you won’t stop. You’re an addict. And so am I. You can’t keep your dirty little obsession a secret forever.

Just ask the family of Diane Schuler. In 2009 she hid her alcohol addiction from her family. She drove intoxicated into oncoming traffic resulting in her own death and the deaths of seven innocent people. Then her family and the nation learned the truth.

What is it?

What’s your addiction? The devil is unoriginal. He uses the same tired temptations against you. Why? It works. It works so well because the excuses flow freely. “I can stop at any time.” “It’s not that bad.” “No one knows.” “I’m in control.” “It’s not as bad as …”

Addiction makes you do irrational things, like making excuses over what you know is hurting you physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It’s hard to admit you’re powerless to temptation that’s trying to squeeze the life out of your soul. “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up” (James 4:10). God will lift you up because he lifted up his Son upon a cross to pay the price for you to free you from the clutches of the devil. Humble yourself. And you will be lifted up.
