You are normal

When you find yourself addicted to destructive behavior, you might assume that you are not normal, the only one who struggles so deeply, so regularly, so pathetically.

But you’d be wrong.

The apostle Paul can relate to you: “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing” (Romans 7:15-19).

The human struggle versus the sinful nature might vary in its specifics (you lust, she worries, he gets angry), but we all have this in common—we don’t do what we want. Not yet.

This truth is what drives us back to Jesus, trusting that only he can make us good enough to stand before the Father. And it drives us to each other, trusting that fellow Christians get it and would love to pray about it (James 5:16).

So don’t let the devil convince you that you are too abnormal to belong. You belong here, in God’s family, at the foot of the cross.
