The prophet Jonah was sent to tell the people in the ancient city of Nineveh that God had taken notice of their wickedness. His warning of pending judgment got the attention of this godless city, and they became hopelessly desperate to avoid what Jonah was predicting. Here’s how Nineveh’s king summarized their situation:

“Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish” (Jonah 3:9).

Just maybe God would pull back his anger if they repented. They had no guarantee of how God would react to their repentance, but it was their only option at that point.

Perhaps there is something going on in your life that is putting you in a similar situation. You feel convicted of a sin and wonder if God could possibly forgive it. Perhaps like the Ninevites, you have acknowledged your guilt to God but afterward you thought to yourself, “Who knows?”

I can give you some good news that the Ninevites wished to have. We do know. We have a guarantee of how God reacts to those who repent. He immediately and fully forgives. How he can do that is through the cross of Jesus. The guarantee is the empty tomb of Jesus.

Take heart today that God has revealed the fullness of his grace to you. There is no doubt how he reacts to your repentance, and that is a good thing to know.
