You shine!

In the rural hill country of Texas, miles away from city lights, many more stars appear in the night sky. It puts my constellation skills to the test. Where exactly is the North Star?

If you can locate the outer edge of the Big Dipper’s bowl (the edge farther from the handle), draw an imaginary line extending from the star on the bottom through the star on the top. This line takes you directly to the North Star.

It takes a bit of knowledge and practice—or an app on your phone—to identify constellations. But there is one star you have no problem identifying. The sun! Same with the moon at night. Much more obvious.

You probably even know how the moon shines light. The moon doesn’t generate its own light, like the sun, but reflects the light of the sun.

The Bible says that Christians are “children of light” (Ephesians 5:8). We don’t generate our own light, like children don’t bring themselves into existence. We reflect a greater light. The light of God.

God shines. Believe in him, and you are enlightened by him, like the moon. You shine too. Others can look at you and say, “I see a reflection of God.” No, you aren’t God. Just like the moon is not the sun. But you do shine with God’s light.

The Bible calls both Jesus and his believers “the light of the world” (John 8:12; Matthew 5:14). So go shine today!
